Learn To Crochet
At Four Otter Craft Studio, our beginner classes are designed to take you from absolute zero to feeling comfortable with your yarn, tools, and first stitches.
You don’t need experience, coordination, or any special skills — just curiosity and a willingness to try something new.
We’ll teach you step by step, at your pace, in a warm and friendly environment.
Start Your Journey
Learn the foundations here.
Have you always wanted to learn to crochet but didn't know where to start?
Our friendly three-week beginner course is designed for people who have never picked up a hook before, or who learnt years ago and would like to start again.
We keep our classes small, teach at a relaxed pace, and make sure everyone gets plenty of individual help. There are no silly questions, no pressure to keep up, and no expectation that you'll get everything right first time.
By the end of the course, you'll understand how crochet works and have the confidence to continue making your own projects.
What you'll learn
Week 1 – Getting started
We'll begin with the basics: how to hold your hook and yarn comfortably, make a slip knot and chain, and create your first stitches.
This is often the hardest part of learning to crochet, so we spend plenty of time practising together until everything starts to feel natural.
Week 2 – Making your first 3D project
You'll learn the double crochet stitch (called single crochet in US patterns), along with increasing and decreasing stitches to create shape.
We'll put these new skills into practice by making a simple crochet bowl.
Week 3 – Granny squares and colour changes
We'll finish by making one of crochet's best-loved projects: the granny square.
You'll learn how to turn neat corners, change colours confidently, and understand how granny squares are constructed.

Not Sure Whether to Choose Knitting or Crochet?
If you’re torn between knitting and crochet, think about what you want to make first:
Homewares, blankets, and textured pieces?
Crochet is brilliant — it grows quickly, holds structure well, and is perfect for cosy, creative projects.Garments, accessories, and anything drapey or wearable?
Knitting creates a softer, fabric-like feel that’s ideal for clothing, scarves, hats, and more fitted items.
But here’s the truth: you can’t choose “wrong.”
Both crafts are wonderful, both are creative, and both open the door to a whole world of making.
Start with whichever one interests you most right now — you can always try the other later.
We love teaching beginners, and we’ll be with you every step of the way.
